Ingredients🧙‍♀️

  • Green food coloring – A few drops for that witchy hue (halve if using gel).
  • Unsalted butter – Softened for creaming; the key to rich, buttery shortbread.
  • All-purpose flour – Provides the perfect tender crumb.
  • Confectioners’ sugar – Creates a crisp, melt-in-your-mouth texture.
  • Almond + vanilla extracts – Add depth and sweetness to the flavor.
  • Pistachios – Finely chopped for “warts” or texture (optional).
  • Slivered almonds – To form spooky fingernails (or coconut for nut-free).
  • Cherry jam – For that oozy, blood-red finish; raspberry or strawberry works too.

 

Directions👻

  1. Mix the base: Beat butter and confectioners’ sugar until pale and fluffy (about 2 min). Add egg, almond and vanilla extracts, plus green food coloring. Mix until evenly tinted.
  2. Add dry ingredients: In another bowl, whisk flour and salt. Combine with butter mix on low speed, then fold in chopped pistachios.
  3. Chill the dough: Cover and refrigerate 30 min (up to 2 days). Line baking sheets with parchment.
  4. Shape fingers: Roll 1 Tbsp. dough balls into 3-inch logs. Press a sliced almond “nail” at one end, pinch to form knuckles, score lines with a knife, and press in pistachio “warts.” Freeze 30 min.
  5. Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F. Bake 7–9 min until firm at edges. Cool slightly.
  6. Add the gore: Remove almond “nails,” dab jam at the tip, and press the nail back on to let it ooze. Spread jam at the base. Cool completely before serving your spooky treats.
