Fiber optics is a subset of optics that deals with how light behaves in fibers. Fibers are cables that are made of materials like glass or plastic and clad in something with a lower index of refraction than the core. Choosing the appropriate materials for the core and the cladding produces total internal reflection inside the core, thus light can be transmitted through the cable.

StellarNet’s fibers are multimodal fibers. This means that there are many paths, or modes, that the light can travel to reach the other end. They tend to have a wide acceptance cone, meaning that alignment does not have to be very precise when using these cables. They also eliminate the need for many mirrors to direct light from the light source to the sample to the spectrometer.
