Combination bands occur when two or more molecular vibrations are excited simultaneously, producing absorption features at unique wavelengths within the near-infrared region. Together with overtone bands, combination bands provide much of the chemical information used in NIR spectroscopy.

These spectral features allow NIR spectrometers to identify materials and perform quantitative analysis for applications such as moisture measurement, ingredient verification, pharmaceutical analysis, and process monitoring.
