Abstract

The use of recycled materials such as waste glass (WG) in the ceramic industry is considered as a plus for saving natural resources and avoiding potential environmental risks. This paper studies the characterization of ceramic roof tiles using recycled WG as a coating, in terms of their physical, mechanical and optical characteristics, to evaluate the influence of WG type and shape of tiles on the overall behavior. The results show that the application of WG allows to obtain appropriate physical and mechanical characteristics of tiles in general, and the cathode ray tube WG enhances the normal solar reflectance in particular. Therefore, using recycled waste glass to develop cool coatings makes this solution a sustainable and viable option for contributing to the circularity and to the urban heat island effect mitigation.

…The colorimetric characterization and the normal solar reflectance tests were performed using the fiber optic Stellarnet spectrometer. The spectrometer works in the radiation range of 350-1100nm, taking measurements for the VIS and NIR radiation according to ASTM E903 standard for laboratory measurements [27]. All the experimental set up is presented in the previous study [24]…
