The Series 52 Lovibond Scale (°L) consists of individual slides or solutions for Lovibond specific values. The SRM method was initially designed to be comparable to the Lovibond scale and the two scales are almost identical for most of their range. However, as wort darkens, the resolution of a spectrometer diminishes, as little light can reach the detector. When given precise color references, such as the Lovibond scale, the human eye can distinguish very slight differences in color. For this reason, the Lovibond scale is still in use today, most commonly in the rating and determination of roasted or dark malts, where Lovibond values can exceed 300°L
