Part 1
Once upon a time in the delightfully eerie Addams Family mansion, the family decided to throw a Halloween party that would make the ghost of Edgar Allan Poe shiver with excitement.
Spectroscopy studies how matter interacts with electromagnetic radiation, such as light. In simpler terms, it’s a technique used to analyze how light interacts with a sample to determine its properties, like composition or structure. StellarNet has a wide array of spectrometers for measurements in the UV to the NIR.
Fluorescence spectroscopy is a popular method of measurement for a variety of samples such as organic compounds, pigments, and biological tissues. It is the perfect technique for studying pickled green eyeballs. A fluorescence system includes a light source that emits at specific wavelengths, a spectrometer, and collection accessories like a probe or cuvette holder.
Here is how the measurement would go:
The eyeballs are illuminated with light at a specific wavelength (usually UV or visible light). This light excites the electrons in certain molecules within the sample.
The excited molecules emit light at longer wavelengths when they return to their ground state (when you are no longer illuminating the sample). This emitted light is fluorescence.
To measure this, a spectrometer (like the SILVER-Nova or HYPER-Nova) is used to capture the emitted light. The fluorescence spectrum can reveal compounds like pigments or preservatives present in a sample or might be able to identify where the eyeballs originated from.
Part 2
Using a Spectrofluorometer to measure witch’s brew… StellarNet’s line of research grade fluorescence systems are designed for a wide range of applications requiring eXtreme sensitivity. Choose from our research grade BLACK-Comet with concave grating optics, our high performance SILVER-Nova with Thermo Electric Cooling (TEC), or our HYPER-Nova UVIS high performance spectrometers that uses Low Dark Current (LDC) technology. Sample types include powders, liquids, films and surfaces and there are options for cuvette, probe, and/or flow cell accessories. As always, StellarNet instrumentation is built modularized, compact, and rugged for field, process, or lab environments.
Like the Addams Family, you can also characterize the fluorescence of your witch’s brew. Simply place your brew into a cuvette and place the cuvette into the holder. StellarNet’s pre-configured fluorescence systems come with a Y-fiber for dual pick-up at 90 degrees. As your sample excited by the LED, the software will show the resulting emission spectra. Fluorescence is a powerful measurement method allowing for chemical compound identification, concentration, and even containment detection.
Through the power of fluorescence, the Addams Family’s witch’s brew revealed a host of mysterious compounds. The glowing emission spectra pointed to the presence of eerie graveyard fog, faint traces of vampire blood, and the shimmering essence of banshee tears—each identified by their unique fluorescent signature. Each haunting ingredient left its unique mark in the spectral signature, as if whispering the secrets of the night into the brew. The spectrofluorometer not only detected the type of compounds but also measured their concentrations, from the faintest wisps of potion to the most concentrated magical elements.
And what happens when Cousin Itt accidentally spills the cauldron? How does it react? Find out in Part 3!
Part 3
Flame colors serve as a visual indicator of the elements present in a chemical compound, allowing scientists to identify specific elements by the light they emit when heated. This phenomenon occurs due to the movement of electrons within an atom: when an element is heated, its electrons absorb energy and jump to higher energy levels. As the electrons return to their original, lower energy states, they release energy in the form of light. Each element has a unique atomic structure that dictates the color of light emitted, which is why flames of different compounds display specific colors. For example, sodium salts produce a bright yellow-orange flame, potassium compounds produce a lilac or purple flame, and lithium and strontium compounds emit a vivid red flame.
These distinct flame colors are used in a technique known as flame spectroscopy, which helps scientists and chemists identify the elements within a substance quickly and efficiently. Copper compounds, for instance, burn with a green or blue-green hue, while calcium salts create an orange–red flame, and barium compounds emit a pale green light. Such flame tests are frequently used in laboratory settings and in fireworks manufacturing to produce specific colors. The colors provide a quick and accessible method to analyze the chemical composition of unknown substances, especially in combination with other spectroscopic techniques, making it an essential tool in chemistry and material sciences.
Using our StellarRAD™ Series 4 Handheld SpectroRadiometer, we can capture emission spectra across the visible range, allowing you to analyze the unique wavelengths emitted by different elements in a flame. Its design is optimized for ease of use and rapid data collection, making it ideal for identifying flame colors on the spot and correlating them with specific elemental signatures. This compact and rugged device brings StellarNet’s precision directly into your hands, even in challenging environments.
And so, amidst the glowing chaos, the Addams Family threw the most scientifically enchanting Halloween party, proving once and for all that spectroscopy might just be the spookiest science of them all! The party became an unforgettable fusion of science and the supernatural, with spectroscopy revealing the mysteries within their eerie brews and potions.
The unique glow of each spectral signature—from the ghostly green of pickled eyeballs to the haunting hues of flame colors—unveiled an alchemical map of the spectral world, capturing the essence of graveyard fog, vampire blood, and banshee tears. Through the illuminating power of fluorescence and flame analysis, each haunting ingredient revealed its secrets, transforming the Addams’ darkly delightful gathering into a celebration of chemistry and magic that only they could conjure.
